I'm of the opinion that an artist residency shouldn't just involve
the artist doing what they always do and just happen to have been
plonked in a school, gallery or community centre. I've seen that
happen a lot, especially with artists that are really only doing
the residency as a meal ticket without an organic dialogue with
their hosts. Because of this, my work with different hosts has been
incredibly eclectic!

Sometimes residencies are advertised with the phrase "50% of the
time, the artist is developing their own practice." I'm not really
like that, I feel that my own work in residency situations is
totally influenced by the unique environment of the residency
itself, so I tend to be great value in a residency situation. So I
try and develop residency projects where both host and Dooks are
creatively satisfied!
